The Often Missed Reason for Lateral Foot Pain

Cuboid syndrome occurs when the small cube shaped bone on the outer side of the foot shifts slightly out of position or becomes irritated by surrounding tissues. This often results in a sharp or aching pain along the outside of the foot, especially during walking, pushing off, or standing on uneven ground. Some people describe a feeling of weakness or a sensation that the foot is not moving smoothly. The discomfort may appear after an ankle sprain, repetitive strain, or activities that place extra pressure on the lateral side of the foot. Because the symptoms can mimic other conditions, it is easy to overlook the cuboid as the source of the problem. Early care, wearing supportive footwear, and proper assessment help restore comfort and function. If you experience persistent pain along the outer foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Bazzi Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Supporting Healthy Feet as You Age

As the body changes with age, the feet often feel the effects first because they carry the weight of every step. Skin may become thinner and drier, toenails may thicken, and flexibility can decrease, making routine care more important. Many older adults experience reduced sensation or slower healing, which means small issues like corns, cracks, or nail problems can progress more quickly than expected. Choosing supportive footwear, moisturizing regularly, and checking the feet each day for redness, swelling, or pressure spots can help maintain comfort and stability. Gentle stretching and staying active can also improve circulation and mobility. Being consistent with foot care supports safer movement and overall well-being. If you notice persistent discomfort, skin changes, or difficulty walking, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for individualized guidance.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Bazzi Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Understanding the early signs of plantar fasciitis can help prevent the condition from becoming a long lasting source of heel discomfort. Many people first notice a sharp ache when taking the first steps in the morning or after sitting for a while. This irritation develops when the thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot becomes strained, often from overuse, inadequate support, or tight calf muscles. Paying attention to these early signals allows you to adjust activity, improve footwear, and explore gentle stretching before the pain becomes more persistent. Ignoring the issue can affect walking, balance, and overall mobility. Staying informed encourages quicker relief and helps protect the long-term health of your feet. If you have recurring heel pain or morning stiffness, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for appropriate guidance.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Bazzi Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Sesamoiditis is a painful inflammation of the tiny sesamoid bones located beneath the big toe joint. These small bones act like pulleys, helping the tendons move smoothly and absorb pressure with every step. When they become irritated from overuse, repetitive impact, or increased activity on hard surfaces, pain develops directly under the big toe. Many people describe a deep ache or sharp discomfort that worsens when pushing off the toe while walking. Swelling, tenderness, and difficulty bending the big toe are common signs. Dancers, runners, people with high arches, and anyone who spends long hours on their feet are more prone to this condition. Without proper care, symptoms can progress and interfere with daily movement. Rest, wearing supportive footwear, and targeted treatments can provide relief. If you notice persistent pain beneath your big toe or difficulty bearing weight, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for an evaluation and personalized treatment.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of Bazzi Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Detroit, West Detroit, Northwest Detroit, Sterling Heights, Hamtramck, Dearborn Heights, Madison Heights, Redford, and Livonia, MI . Causes of Foot Cramps

Foot cramps are sudden, involuntary contractions of the muscles in the foot that can cause sharp pain and discomfort. They often occur due to wearing tight or poorly fitting shoes, dehydration, overexertion during physical activity, or low levels of essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, or magnesium. Symptoms include a sudden tightening or knotting of the foot muscles, stiffness, and difficulty moving the affected area. Frequent cramps may indicate underlying issues with circulation, nerve function, or muscle balance. A podiatrist can evaluate the cause of foot cramps, recommend stretching and strengthening exercises, suggest proper footwear, and provide guidance on nutrition and hydration to reduce occurrences. If you have developed foot cramps, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to relieve pain and maintain healthy, comfortable feet.
